be the change

For the longest time I sat here, thinking to myself, well..this is pretty self explanatory..I volunteered my time with The Salvation Army..what else do I need to say??

After thinking about it, I realized it's more than that. The short version goes like this: I clicked around on volunteermatch.org (that's what it's called, I think....?), found a volunteer opportunity with The Salvation Army meeting at a local Target where Target donated $80 to each child in the program and we (the volunteers) were matched with a child and we got to go shopping for school clothes with these kids for about 2 hours. For someone like me this is PERFECT -- I got to A) help somebody else find clothes B) spend someone else's money and C) of course, walk away knowing I helped SOMEONE - it might not be much, if anything, but YES it's something. Of course when we met the lady scared the jeepers out of me -- as most people know, I can be a fairly shy and soft spoken person (you know it's true!) and when she said "be prepared to get a child on all spectrums -- some will be excited and happy, others may be shy, and some may feel upset or resentment for having to be here" let's just say the first thing that popped into my head was "oh great, knowing my luck I'll get the child who wants nothing to do with me!" Well..I got lucky. I was paired with a little girl named Callie - she was bright, happy, excited, and very sociable. We spent almost the whole time we were allotted to find her clothes, shoes, socks, etc. She was very grateful and excited for her new school clothes and she had no problem showing her friends what she got either. She walked away having a good experience...and so did I.

I came to the realization that little gestures can make the biggest impact and I also realized that walking away feeling blessed and fulfilled is one of the greatest feelings ever. Sometimes people can be so hesitant (and perhaps selfish) to lend a helping hand -- and we forget that it is, not only, our service to others, but many times, it is that service that leaves us the most satisfied. You forget how great that feeling is until you actually do it. That experience alone put that in perspective and WILL keep me looking for and acting upon more opportunities.

If I have one piece of advice, it is this...go to volunteermatch.org and pick something then follow through with it. And HEY, if you want to invite me along, I'd be more than happy to come.

 Ta ta for now!

xoxo,

Kelly

Ps... after volunteering was done, I headed home to Maple Grove for a few hours. It was so beautiful out I had to capture it. It was one of those perfect summer days.....one that I will miss when there is about 2 feet of snow.. ;)

Days like these

Let me just start by saying that yesterday was absolutely BEAUTIFUL. It was one of those days I've been waiting for since the minute it started getting colder in the fall. My intention was to take the day off and pack, do laundry, get some stuff done at home, but when you wake up to a sunny day let's just say those thoughts go out the window. With that, Sara and I headed to Stillwater to grab lunch and make the most out of the weather -- and let's just say I think we accomplished our goal. There's nothing I love more than sunglasses, music blasting, laughing, and driving with my windows down. Here are some of the pictures I came up with :)

Well... seeing as I've done TWO posts in two days, I'll most likely be MIA for a little bit.. ;)

Enjoy the beautiful weather!

Find the wonderful in today

Like most people, my life is chaotic. I am literally always on the go - Fairview, Pier1 (new job since January), going for a run, shopping, getting a hair cut, grabbing dinner with a friend, looking at apartments, and so on. Thankfully school is no longer in that list ;). You name it, I'm probably doing it.  Although it can get overwhelming, I honestly wouldn't change it for the world - it keeps me going, it keeps me happy, and it keeps me motivated. It makes me realize just how lucky and fortunate I am and it makes me strive to be better and, as corny as this sounds, not take anything for granted either. You are probably wondering what I am going to pull out of my creative bag next, but quite honestly, I've got nothing. All I've got right now is a list of things that make me happy. I've realized this whole little blog experience doesn't need to always revolve around sanding, painting, thrifting, or using my best judgment to make something beautiful. Instead, it can revolve around the true simplicities in life which inspire me and perhaps might help you understand where I'm coming from. All I've got to say is --take it or leave it, baby. :)

Anyways, I love:

.the number 19
.warm smiles
.inspirational, hard-working, dedicated people
.cuddling up in bed on cold winter nights with my christmas tree lights on, candles lit, watching a christmas movie of some sort (AHEM --Home Alone...)
.Vino Verde (my FAVORITE wine from Trader Joe's)
.laughing until it literally hurts
.my family - in my opinion, the greatest people ever - no matter how much we hit heads ;)
.my Fairview crew
.warm summer Saturday mornings at Lake Calhoun
.long drives
.reminiscing and having pictures to back up those memories
.hockey
.thrift stores
.Modern Family (the sitcom) - absolutely HYSTERICAL
.my best friends
.girls night out
.Tim McGraw concert 2010 at the grandstand
.inspirational sayings - seriously corny I know
.songs with lyrics I can relate to
.true friends
.my iPhone - yes I said it...
.driving to broomball every Friday in January and February
.my school counseling internship
.bonfires
.wearing sweats
.my family being proud of me
.compliments: giving and receiving
.making someone else's day
.helping others
.striving to be better
.Postsecret.com - READ if you haven't
.being loved
.looking forward to tomorrow

I miss:

.senior year of HS - driving to St Paul for every hockey practice with my dad
.traveling for hockey - Osseo, Thoroughbreds, River Falls - the whole shebang
.being irresponsible in college
.The feeling of working hard at a sport
.Being in shape (sighhh)
.Spring Break '08 to Panama City Beach, FL
.anybody who I've lost
.The Suspects (intermural softball team) - hey, I sat myself out for obvious reasons, but DANG we were pretty good.. ;)
.being young and relentless
.Officiating broomball - HATED that job in college, but looking back it wasn't so bad. Which brings me to my next bullet point...
.being a carnie for my coach during the summer months for all 4 years of college - I don't enjoy spending long 12 hour + days on my feet, sweating, oversized grease-stained shirts, or being dirty, but I can honestly say I have never laughed so hard as I did when I was stuck in a dang trailer for 9 days. Let's just say you learn to entertain yourselves and you realize how much you cherish A/C ;)
.memories

Clearly I have MANY more things that tickle my fancy, but let's face it, it's nearly midnight and this girl needs her sleep. I did, however, take tomorrow off to finish packing (leaving for Florida this Friday), go running, clean my room AND car, and perhaps do something fun, but STILL -- I don't want to waste it sleeping. I promise I will update more than I have -- this next month will be busy busy, but like always, I will be ready to embrace whatever comes my way.

Have a great week and remember to cherish the little things in life--and, as my sign says, 'find the wonderful in today' :)

xoxo,

Kelly

Ps. When I say clean my room, I'm not talking about a little dusting and making my bed. Here's my proof:

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

If there is one thing that I am jealous of, it would DEFINITELY be photographers. They have the ability to take the most simple object and turn it into something spectacular. When my mom showed up at home one day with a Canon Rebel SLR camera of some sort I had a hay day. I pretended to be one of those people I was so jealous of and although I am still learning, I still thrive to take that camera out and get some shots of the simplicities of life. Here are a few pictures I've come up with (and hey, I'm not an expert by any means, so cut me some slack.... :D )

Let your passion define you

As I was sitting at work today, I looked through my pictures, edited them, and decided to share them, so for the meantime, this is what I have...I'm not the most creative person there is, but I thrive on taking a piece of simplicity, throwing my personal touch at it, and seeing what I come up with. Sometimes it works..and well, sometimes it doesn't. Thankfully, these ones worked... :)

And for the drumroll, my favorite thus far.....

Just a few I came up with off the top of my head and hopefully many more to come. I hope you enjoyed them as much as I enjoyed making them :)
